Cool. Pylon Reenactment Society (featuring Vanessa Briscoe Hay)

When people talk about the beginnings of the music scene in Athens, GA the discussion usually begins with The B-52’s and R.E.M. Those who know will continue the list…Pylon. They were every Athens band’s favorite Athens band. Their musical naïveté, southern upbringing, art school smarts, and house-party roots exploded together to create something quite simply […]

MEMORIAL DAY CRESCENDOS #ARA2014

MEMORIAL DAY CRESCENDOS #ARA2014

Art Rocks Athens Crescendos  With Memorial Day Weekend Festival Of Performance And Exhibitions Athens, GA  Art Rocks Athens continues its May series of exhibitions with a three day festival beginning Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25. The Memorial Day weekend festival has events planned at many notable Athens institutions including the UGA Dance Department, the Lamar Dodd School of Art, the Georgia Museum of Art, the 40 Watt, the Georgia Theatre and the Lyndon House. In the 1970s, the University of Georgia and the town of Athens, Georgia found itself home to a small group of artists who were at the center of a creative artistic explosion. The events and exhibitions of Art Rocks Athens focus on this little known art movement that predates the famous Athens music scene of the late 70s and early 80s which includes the music of the B52’s, Pylon, Love Tractor, The Method Actors and R.E.M. Many of the musicians who later formed famous bands were participants in this colorful, fun and sometimes outlandish art scene unique to Athens, Georgia. From the mid 1970s to the early 1980s, students at the UGA Art School began to foster a distinctly unique approach to creative expression. A few professors who encouraged cutting edge thinking and outside the box creativity found themselves sometimes butting heads with a more conservative administration. One such instructor Robert Croker has returned to Athens to curate the flagship fine arts show of the Festival, Between Rock And An Art Place, opening at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 23 at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art. Friday’s events continue with music at 9 p.m. at the 40 Watt including performances by Is/Ought Gap, Vanessa Hay of Pylon and the B53’s, with other artists to be announced. The Georgia Museum of Art has curated Shapes That Talk To Me to coincide with the Memorial Day weekend events of Art Rocks Athens. The museum galleries will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday events continue at UGA New Dance Theatre from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with an opening reception displaying the dance photography of the late L. David Dwinell, and a 7:00 p.m. curtain call for Clear The Floor, a retrospective dance concert, directed by Peggy Thrasher Law, featuring choreography by independent Athens artists, former students and faculty members of the UGA Dance Department. Later Saturday evening, music at the Georgia Theatre includes a starstudded lineup of favorite and seldom seen Athens bands. Performers include Ola Moon (featuring Cindy Wilson and Dana Downs), Army Wellford & Friends, OhOK, Squalls, David Barbe and special surprises. You can sleep in on Sunday because the opening of #ARA2014’s graphics arts exhibition, Paper Covers Rock, starts at 3 p.m at the historic Lyndon House Arts Center. This exhibition features fliers, album art, posters and the necessary street graphics of all kinds that were required to get word out about the rapidly expanding music scene of Athens between 1975 and 1985. Join other musicians for an informal jam session on the porch overlooking the backyard of the Lyndon House. Everything begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 25. An ongoing exhibition at UGA Special Collections libraries, ARTifacts Rock Athens includes a treasure trove of Athens rock memorabilia including guitars owned by the late Ricky Wilson of the B52’s, artifacts from celebrated Athens poet and writer John Seawright, founding R.E.M. member Bill Berry’s drum kit and the band Pylon’s original pylon. Also, look for an original paining by […]
