“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero, 42 B.C.
Gerrymandering and the Tea Party have combined to transform the Republican Party into a fanatical cult and the chambers of Congress into wings of an insane asylum. If the cult members only threatened harm to themselves and the inmates were well controlled this might not be a matter of national concern, but the cultists are threatening harm to the country and all citizens while the inmates run amok.
We the people are honor bound to preserve, defend, protect, and perfect our Constitutional Republic. This obligation does not cease for any of us elected to national office. No matter how fervently we desire a particular political change, we can neither attack the government nor authorize sabotage by elected representatives. Any changes must be made through proper constitutional means. This would require getting identical bills passed in each chamber of Congress and having the resultant bill signed by a president. As the initial enactment of the Affordable Care Act demonstrated this can be a difficult process. The Republican Cultists seek to shortcut this process by hostage taking and sabotage.
Republican cultists now serving in Congress need to do their constitutional duty and quit trying to justify their deplorable behavior by alleging they are serving their constituents. At the very least, these fanatics in Congress-member clothing are saboteurs. In all likelihood, they are traitors as well. As if, their sabotage regarding the operation of the government and hostage taking regarding the Affordable Care Act were insufficient evidence of bad faith and unfitness for office, the fanatics threaten to default on the debts of the United States as well. In doing so, they ignore both Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution and Section 4 of the Fourteenth Amendment. These people are not conservatives and they most assuredly are not loyal and patriotic Americans. Consider the following from the Father of Our Country:
“No pecuniary consideration is more urgent than the regular redemption and discharge of the public debt; on none can delay be more injurious, or an economy of the time more valuable.”
Whenever a Republican Cult member speaks on the crisis for which they and they alone, are responsible, they offer glib rationalizations. They even try to take credit for keeping the government funded despite the fact that they have twice passed bills they know will not survive in the Senate and would never be signed by President Obama. Their measure purportedly funding of the government stands on one leg of a three-legged stool and they have knowingly and with malice aforethought sawed the other two legs off! Nonetheless, they are so deluded and so arrogant, they expect others to view their stark nakedness and compliment them on their choice of tailors.
With just over 2 days until the government runs out of money, House Republicans have made their choice. They are seeking to disguise what they are doing and confuse the public. Despite their camouflage, they are exposing themselves. On September 29, 2013, in the afternoon, they are voting to force a government shutdown unless their ransom demand for a one-year delay of Obamacare is met.
Roughly fifty-seven hours from now, Republicans will either shut down the government; hurt our economy and our families — or they can pull our country away from the brink, again, and avert yet another self-inflicted crisis. Based on the latest reports on the House leadership’s deliberations, it is clear the Republican Cult is determined to press their threat and inflict harm on the nation, its economy, and its citizens. Government by crisis is not governing; it’s hostage-taking. Negotiating with threats is not negotiating; it’s extortion. It’s up to all genuinely patriotic Americans to hold these fanatics accountable. They have been given too many chances to ruin our national economy and the global economy, and to callously wreak suffering upon our citizens, and to demoralize the whole country.
We must never forget nor allow the Republican Cult to obscure the oath every one of them has sworn before taking their Congressional office. They solemnly vowed to defend and support the Constitution of the United States and bear true faith and allegiance to the same. They also vowed to faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which they were about to enter. It is literally impossible to honestly square shutting down the U S government or defaulting on the debts of the United States with a pledge to bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution or faithfully discharge one’s duties under the Constitution. As is so often the case, the unconstitutional actions of these fanatics roar so loudly, it is impossible to hear their words. Oaths of liars are no oaths at all. They are tales told by idiots and signify nothing but the conviction of the oath breakers that honor is for suckers.
Right now, the Republican-controlled House is chaotic. Senate Majority Leader Reid called them anarchists. One thing is clear, the Republican Cult is operating with level of refusal to accept the clear results of the last election and a level of animosity that has never been seen since the 1850s, just before the Civil War. Regrettably, the American Republic once again has real and dangerous enemies within itself. These saboteurs and insurrectionists have used their position within the Republic to sow seeds of suspicion and hostility among their constituents. Collaborators in their home states have so designed their Congressional Districts that the fanatics face little real challenge. These same gerrymandered districts enabled a party that lost the election by 1.4 million votes to work a virtual coup and gain a majority of seats in the House.
But no matter what the fanatics do between now and midnight Monday, one task is crystal clear. The American people cannot trust these dishonorable, irresponsible, and disloyal cultists. America needs people in government who want to govern. These fanatics have shown they are not willing to do so. These fanatical Republicans seek to rule our country, not to govern it. Thereby they disavow not only their oaths and the Constitution, but the very premise of the American Revolution. They must be defeated in November 2014 and sent home.
Even as “Washington is still wrangling over a way to avoid a government shutdown next week, while Republicans are already gearing up to refuse to raise the debt limit — something that no Congress under any other president has ever refused to do.” As Charles M. Blow observes:
“But those presidents were not Barack Obama, the bane of the far right’s existence, and those Congresses were not as infested with members who saw disruption as part of their duty.”
Due to Obama Derangement Syndrome, these oppositional-defiant cultists will continue to subordinate America’s interest and its Constitution to their own crazed desires to make him fail. The Speaker of the House is sometimes given credit for being at the mercy of these fanatics and therefore, treated with sympathy rather than scorn. However, Mr. Boehner is an adult and a full participant in the extortion efforts. Again quoting Charles M. Blow:
“Focus instead on the fundamental disagreement here: The president is saying that he won’t negotiate over a stunt that would destroy our economy and the world’s, while Republicans are saying they are willing to risk it all in order to derail him.”
Boehner is the spokesperson for the hostage-takers and saboteurs. He deserves to be returned to private life just as much as the most rabid cultist in his caucus.
If we are genuinely patriots, we will not rest until this deplorable interval in the nation’s history is brought to a close. With its mix of racism, fanaticism, opportunism, and power lust, it is unseemly and noxious. We the people still have the power to bring it to an end. As in another time, “it is our right; it is our duty.” Let it be!
