Mommy Doesn’t Know
When it comes to my toddler there are times I not only don’t know the answer, but I also am not quite sure what the question is.
I was sitting at my desk one day when Abigail toddled over and asked me a question. I realize I’ve had her three years now, but I still don’t speak Babble. (A cruel flaw on Nature’s part, I’m sure.) I had no idea what she was asking for. So to be honest I told her I didn’t understand. She repeated herself with insistence to which I had to again admit I had no idea what she was saying.
She burst into tears, stomped her little foot and on her way out of the room yelled, “Why you da mommy?”
I couldn’t answer that either.
This morning as I was knitting and she was eating her breakfast cereal she asked, ‘Where yarn come from?”
“Well, some yarn comes from sheep or goats or rabbits or llamas.”
She nodded and said, “Or birds.”
“No, birds have feathers, not fur. Fur makes yarn.”
“Oh. I a bird.”
“Do you have feathers?”
“Uh huh!” (Then she babbled again and ended with “bird nest.”)
“Do you have a nest?”
“Uh huh!”
“Where is your nest?”
“Uh…I dunno.”
“Is your nest in your room?”
“Uh…yeah. I go get it!”
She emerged from her bedroom carrying her Tinkerbell encased pillow which she threw on the floor in front of the tv. Then she hopped on it. Then she came back into the kitchen and said, “My nest too big!”
I can’t wait for Daddy to call and ask what we’ve been up to this morning.
“I was knitting so Abby turned into a bird and made a nest in the living room.”
Apparently there are answers you can’t understand too.

I wish we could all stay as children with the imagination and belief that makes a pillow a birds nest and and yarn come from birds. Maybe if you believe it really believe it, it is true.
Dan, thanks for reading. Fortunately I still have a decent imagination. Abby and I get along pretty well. Daddy’s usually confused.
Oh my goodness — how precious! Those days seem so long ago and my youngest is only eleven. When people say ‘treasure these years,’ they’re right! I still remember when my oldest was eighteen months old and cussed me out in Babble when I took away one of her toys for being naughty. It was hysterical. It took all of my power to keep my face straight.
Hi Janeane! Children are so cute you can’t help but giggle. I don’t have the power to keep a straight face and I usually laugh when Abby gets upset…which kind of makes it worse. But she gets snuggles and kisses out of the deal so maybe it’s not so bad? ((0.o))
