We Must Overcome!

Fifty years after the Summer of 64 – aka Freedom Summer – equality before the law is under siege in a town two and one half hours drive from the mean population center of the United States. If there is a heart land, Ferguson MO is close to it.

One half century is a long time in the life of a person and a considerable time in the life of a nation that is not 300 years old. Some day must come soon or people may lose confidence that it will ever arrive. We can no longer be content to believe we shall overcome someday; we must make up our minds that we must overcome – today.

If America it has long dreamed and boasted of being, all people of goodwill whatever their age must again rise to the challenge exemplified by the turmoil in Ferguson, MO.

“We need to learn from the civil rights movement of fifty years ago. It wasn’t just Black Americans, it was everybody, because it wasn’t a Black problem it was an American problem; it was a moral challenge. We are remembering 50 years after the Freedom Summer. That wasn’t just Black people risking their lives, it was White and Black people arm in arm. Americans went down to Mississippi because they knew that when any group within the nation is marginalized then America won’t  be the nation we want to be.”

We must overcome, we must overcome,
We must overcome today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We must overcome today.

The truth must set us free; the truth we all must see,
The truth must set us free today,
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
The truth must set us free today.

We must hand in hand; we must take a stand,
We must take a stand today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We must take a stand today.

We must not be afraid; we must come to one another’s aid,
We must not be afraid today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We must come to one another’s aid today.

We must make our stand; we must make our stand today,
We must have justice in this land today,
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We must take our stand today.

All people must be equally free; all people must be equally free,
We must all be equal and free today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
All people must be equally free today.

For our beloved land, Black and White must now join hands,
We must all join hands today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We all must join hands today.

We must overcome, we must overcome,
We must overcome today.
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We must overcome today.

If not now, when? If not us, whom? Arise my compatriots, the hour has recurred!
