EcoGirl’s Oct. Column: Seeing Past GMO Maker Lies to Vote YES on Prop. 37
This election day, we in California will finally have the opportunity to vote YES for labeling of GMO foods (Prop. 37). And, as expected, the GMO manufacturers are spending millions of advertising dollars to try to talk us voters out of our power and right to know.
So what’s the truth about Prop. 37, beyond their smoke and mirrors, their persuasive but deceptive arguments against it?
The bottom line is that California Proposition 37 is simple and very low-cost to implement. It was put on the ballot through the hard work of many and the signatures of nearly a million people. It is the voice of the people. The opponents are the special interests. And it doesn’t harm farmers. These arguments are all just a distraction, to muddy the water. Don’t let it work!
All Prop. 37 does is offer consumers the same right to know and choose that’s enjoyed by people in nearly 50 countries around the world — 40% of the world’s population. The costs to do so are trivial; the benefits are immense. If the GMO makers are so proud of their products, why do they hide them from us — and force us to eat them against our will?
People have worked for years to finally give us this opportunity in the U.S. Let’s make sure it succeeds.
For a summary of the key clarifying reasons for Prop. 37, see my Oct. column, Ask EcoGirl Facebook page.
People are already starting to vote with absentee ballots. Let’s make sure that folks vote, and vote wisely!
