The afternoon sun feels warm on my skin. Cool wind blows from the west . I am a minute figure in a universe of white sand and undulating waves. All around me, coconuts create shadows that shield my face against the glare of the sun. Maui? Hawaii, Boracay beach? Nope. It’s just my imagination as I listen to the 4-track EP of The Sailmakers. They’re from Leeds and that distinctive sound is all over their songs.
Think of Tarnation and Stone Roses when you ask me to describe their sound. The structure of their music gives more emphasis on the meditative rhythm. Think of incense and flower power when you play one of their tracks. I’d say my personal favorite is Sandblow because it is catchy and I love the use of vocal harmonies, reverb and acoustic guitars. I think this is their potential single.
Come Undone is another song that I like. Listening to it makes me feel warm and bubbly. One again I close my eyes and think about the sea, the sand and the gentle waves lapping at my feet. And even though it is just a dream, I thank this EP for bringing me there. The Sailmakers are definately the kind of band you need to listen to when you are into dreampop, shoegazer bands and 60s psychedelia.
Their music is available to sample from the links below. Give them a try. You might get hooked and thank me for adding a spice to your life! Thanks to our very own Mohammad Zindaki for bringing them to my attention!
