Movie Review: Seven Psychopaths

[media-credit name=”Courtesy of CBS Films” align=”alignleft” width=”202″][/media-credit]Question: Have you ever tried writing a screenplay? Even if it is your job, it is a tough one. Coming up with stories with colorful characters that audiences have to like or even just appreciate isn’t easy. The task is a daunting one actually. I know, I have written a few screenplays. Well, I wrote two and got stuck on my third….Anyway, I saw Seven Psychopaths last night and it may be one of the best films about writing screenplays.

A while back I posted the preview for Seven Psychopaths and had high hopes for it. Well, it delivered and brilliantly. This film turned out to be a real treat filled with twists and turns and surprises I was not expecting. And I see A LOT of films so it is hard to trick me – so kudos to the filmmaker.

I don’t want to go into too much detail with this film; and might I suggest you do not look at the preview. A few of the funny lines were revealed in it that would have made the film viewing experience even more pleasurable. Although, my cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing that I am not sure I could have taken anymore grins. My cheeks are actually a little sore today…haha.

Now I must talk about Sam Rockwell’s character, Billy. He is the buddy of Colin Farrell’s character,  a professional screenwriter that Billy wants to help write his screenplay.  A perfectly written character full of layers and depth; Billy turned out to be the biggest surprise in this film. In fact, I am going to go out on a limb here and forecast that he may be nominated for awards for this role. How he breathed life into this character made it such a joy to watch. It may be an unusual choice for many accolades as his character likes to use the “c-word” a lot, but the performance was spectacular. My emotions went up and down and back again while watching him on the big screen. Sam Rockwell is a phenomenal actor and he was perfectly cast in this role.

Seven Psychopaths is an ensemble film with many, many great actors: Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson and Christopher Walken, just to name a few. However, there aren’t many females in this movie and the ones that are barely spoke a word, on purpose. They were pretty much just eye-candy. Speaking of, if you are easily offended by men putting down women, bigotry, racism and/or foul language by all means skip this film. It is chock full of all of that. However, I will mention that it is completely tongue in cheek, irreverence at its best actually, so you must have a sense of humor. Oh, and a strong stomach. This is quite a bloody, violent film as well.

That’s all. I really want to say more because I absolutely loved this film – so much so that I took a picture with me in a silly hat for this review. Yes, that was a promotional piece handed out at the screeners. Anyway, I recommend seeing this film soon before anyone ruins it for you. But I want to say to Martin McDonagh: you know how to write a GREAT screenplay. Well done!
