It’s the Blunderbuss heard round the world – Jack White’s album that has had everyone enthralled since it’s release in 2012. Who had the chops to lay down a couple of drum beats for it? Who has also been named one of the Top Drummers of 2012? None other than the VERY talented and highly respected drummer Daru Jones.
Even though Daru has been on a grueling tour schedule with Jack White and The RUFF PACK, he still took time to answer some questions and give us more insight into his music. He has very generously shared a behind the scenes look into the recent Austin City Limits appearance by Jack White and the band. Daru will also let us in on his upcoming projects.
Daru, if someone didn’t know you, how would you introduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Daru Jones, and yours? How are you today? lol
When did you start drumming?
I understand you play drums by traditional grip drumming techniques. Can you explain what that means?
You are considered the master of soul hop drumming. How did your style evolve and who influenced you?
I don’t know about all of that, but am trying to master my instrument and get better every time I’m blessed to get behind the kit.
My style is a combination of everything that inspired me from my musician heroes; also many genres from Gospel, Jazz, Soul to Hip-Hop and More!
Drum Influences: Dana Davis, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Stewart Copeland, Steve Smith, Peter Eskine, Bernard Perdie, Virgil Donati, Dave Weckl, Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Gene Krupa, Omar Hakim, Bill Maxwell, Micheal Lee, Terry Givens

What other instruments do you play?
As a producer and the owner of Rusic Records, can you share with us how you discover and develop new talent?
The internet or social networks such as Myspace, Facebook and others have been a great tool to discover new and unheard talented diamonds in the rough.
If the vibe + energy connects with my spirit and soul then it start’s there first.
How did you meet Jack White?
We meet during a session for his label Third Man Records as he did a collaboration with Artist Rapper/Producer Black Milk, and I drummed on the title track.
Here’s a video of Jack White and the band before going onstage at the recent Austin City Limits taping for PBS on January 5, 2013.
