Film View: The Gift

‘The Gift’ takes place in Russia. It is CGI, but real human actors, Sci-Fi short film with a extremely intense chase sequence. The filmmaker have us more than 20 full CGI shots for ‘The Gift’. I thought it was animated, yet it was so perfectly real. It is real, though after watching, I felt otherwise. It does give one a sense of the talent of the filmmaker. The vehicles and some character designs were precisely detailed. It is filled with such an unusual atmosphere filled with a sense of ominous peril. It is definitely not the regular Sci-fi short film one is used to. There is the question of ‘the unicorn’. What does it mean? When you watch you will get some understanding but don’t expect expla – nations. Why did the courier behave so strangely? What was he thinking acting so outrageously? Why did the A.I. behave the way it did?

2 the gift given

It is a technological world, obviously, with A.I.s all about. The three laws of robotics are: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except when such orders would conflict with the first law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first or second law. These are Asimov’s 3 Laws of Robotics guaranteeing the A.I.s won’t turn against any human and they are in place to make human beings less fearful of A.I.s.

3 the gift hidden within

In this tale, there is a magic puzzle box. What it contains makes one very curious. Causing a sense of wonderment if it is what is really being seen by the old man, the receiver of ‘The Gift’. Chaos ensues. A chase begins. An A.I. vs old fashion police cars with insane drivers. They are pursuing the A.I., who’s. riding the fastest, coolest motorcycle, which is open to fill throttle. What happens next is touching, sentimental, and utterly strange. What the A.I. does on the bridge seems unusual. It appears to be showing signs of feelings. Reasons unknown. Raising more questions.

4 the gift being rescued by a.i.

In the final scene, we are shown a young Russia boy gazing down upon a frozen river. What he sees causes him to ponder. Written on the boys face is an expression of complete seriousness and hesitant feelings of amazement.

Cut. Exit stage left.

‘The Gift’ is a conundrum, a puzzle, an enigma. There is no certainty of finding answers, but it does create questions. Worth the short time watching if only for the elegance of the short film and the creator’s talent. Astonishing CGI.’The Gift’ will confound you, but it is worth the journey.

As comedian Bill Hicks always said: “It’s Just a Ride…”

*Today, 23rd November 2016, is my Grandmother’s birthday. She was born 23rd November 1880. Leonard Woolf was born 2 days after my Gram on the 25th November 1880 & Virginia Woolf was born 25th January 1882, just 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days after my Grandmother. My Gram died when I was a kid. I Miss Her Forever & Always! She was a strong believer in Women’s Liberation. I believe she would have known Virginia Woolf. She always believed in me and encouraged me to be Creative, Free and Independent. Before she died, she handed me an older book filled with the stories of Women in (her)story not recorded in any of the professed (his)tory books, with which, we were forced to clog up our minds. She did leave before I was ready, but she gave me ‘The Gift’ I needed most to hold onto, Her Undying Love. I Love You Gram (Emily) Always & Forever… I feel you still protecting me & I believe you have met the Others who watch out for me, too. [This is not a declaration of any belief system. My beliefs are continually altering their opinions about everything, all of the Time.] I write this dedication for The Gift my Grandmother is for me & The Gift she will Always continue to be… * j.kiley *
