The Debating Game
Come all you fine citizens; listen while I sing,
For the fate of our country is a momentous thing.
It rouses anxiety that is a challenge to tame,
And it makes us all part of the debating game.
My name is irrelevant, and my age it means less.
My home is quite modest, and I battle real stress.
I thought all my life there is no place for blame,
But now I am immersed in the debating game.
This country of ours has too long been split;
Nearly half for Obama and the rest are for Mitt.
But still the Republicans are largely to blame,
For shirking their part in the governing game.
They told us how Democrats do not really care,
About the debt and the deficit and the poor doing their share.
They’ve lied and they’ve twisted the facts so they’re battered and lame,
They made these canards part of the debating game.
It’s nearly two years that we’ve been involved in this fray,
With their Super Pacs and the Tea Party leading the play,
Spreading myths and deceptions with the speed of a flame,
To inject their venomous fears into the debating game.
I won’t mind a bit if we shoot down every claim,
They lack all validity and they exhibit no shame,
And yet at their falsehoods experts seldom take aim,
The pundits and others who’ve sold out the debating game.
And now as I sit here, my mind is on hold,
I think of those fakers who have bargained and sold,
And I wish they truly would fact-check each claim,
And restore worth and importance to the debating game.
