Obama and Progress – Too!
Though many bright dreams that we cherished,
Have yet to be fully made true,
We still have their spirit to energize us,
For Obama and Progress, too!
Hurrah for the ideals of the nation,
And our President so wise and so true,
We’ll go for the great transformation,
For Obama and Unity, too!
We’ll go for the son of Hawaii,
The hero of Illinois through,
The pride of the Democrats so clearly,
For Obama and Justice, too!
Now unfurl our banner so glorious,
The star-spangled red, white, and blue,
We’ll fight till our cause is victorious,
For Obama and Tranquility, too.
They’ll find what by thinking and telling,
Our brilliant young leader can do;
For the people are everywhere calling
For Obama and Vigilance, too.
Our Champion’s good wit is unerring,
The Plutocrat’s faults he’ll skew;
Let’s shout for the one we’re preferring,
For Obama and Prosperity, too.
Now unfurl our banner so glorious,
The star-spangled red, white, and blue,
We’ll fight till our cause is victorious,
For Obama and Liberty, too.
While many the hopes that engaged us,
Even now are rising anew.
We’ll meet every challenge before us,
For Obama and Progress, too!
The preceding is an updated version of an 1860 campaign song – Lincoln and Liberty – Too. The video below allows anyone interested to hear this song and mentally set this poem to music. In 2012, spirit and enthusiasm are necessary handmaidens to working, contributing and voting. Let’s stand up, speak out, and turn out for Obama and Progress – Too!

Lincoln and Liberty expressed themes of abolitionism and log cabin virtues, with the chorus also expansively establishing Lincoln as a favorite son of three states (Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois). Shortly after Jesse Hutchinson’s death in 1853, the song was modified to support Lincoln’s presidency. The Hutchinson family traveled through the country singing the song at Lincoln campaign rallies and even in the White House.
Barack Obama is a favorite son of Hawaii and Illinois. He is embroiled in a monumental election struggle against opposing candidates and an opposing party that has a view as divergent from his and the Democratic Party’s as Lincoln struggled with in 1860.
In 1860, the nation was rent by sectional division. Now it is rent by ideological division and roiled by undertones of thinly veiled bigotry. This is far more than a “dime’s worth of difference” between the candidates and the parties. Indeed, there may be a billion dollars worth of difference.
