Unsure about this ‘ traffic ‘ business, and where your site fits into the equation?
Ever see that commercial where a group of people in an office just went live with their website…nothing happens…then ‘ BANG ‘ the counter starts clicking, faster and faster, at first they’re elated by the response, then when the counter goes wild they look at each other in horror ( how can they possibly ship all these orders in time??? )…then some ( I won’t mention them ) courier service comes on to save the day, then instant relief overcomes them.
OH, if only it was like that…put up a site then ‘ BANG ‘ traffic starts pouring in like a flood. Only in the world of Hollywood and advertising production companies does reality take a turn to the bizarre.
So you managed to get your site up, or it’s been up a long time already, and you’re wondering what you’re doing wrong. Well, maybe, you’re doing nothing wrong. Of course the ‘ experts ‘ will tell you that you are, but that’s what they do, if you weren’t doing anything wrong then that would render them useless…wouldn’t it? You must be doing something wrong, or you’d have an extremely popular site like their’s. Even though the ‘ experts ‘ can’t seem to muster themselves in the top 25,000…in fact, most can’t even get themselves into the top 100,000. But, hey, they’re ‘ experts ‘, so who am I to argue?
Sure, maybe there’s a few things you can do to improve your traffic but don’t expect your servers to collapse by the weight of the masses coming to your site. Realistically you can improve your traffic to a point by doing a few little things, but the top 200,000 is so competitive that at some point you’re going to have to reach into that pocket and pull out something other than lint. Yep, if you manage to get yourself into the top 200,000 you’re going to have to part with some cold hard cash to stay there ( exceptions to this rule apply…there are always exceptions to the rule ). My main site has seen itself under 200,000 twice in the four years of it’s existence, and been kicked back over 200,000 both times. Unfortunately the only thing occupying my pockets is lint, otherwise I would have searched around for some great advertising deals.
There are, at last count, over 180 million ‘ distinct ‘ websites on the Net, if your site is in the top million you’re doing better than more than 170 milion other sites. The breakdown goes something like this:
If your site is between:
1 and 5 million on Alexa your site is getting some traffic but not much.
500,000 and 999,999 on Alexa your site is getting low traffic
250,000 and 499,999 on Alexa your site is getting low to low-medium traffic
150,000 and 249,999 on Alexa your site is getting medium traffic
75,000 and 149,999 on Alexa your site is getting medium to low-high traffic
25,000 and 74,999 on Alexa your site is getting high traffic
10,000 and 24,999 on Alexa your site is getting very high traffic
1,000 and 9,999 on Alexa your site is getting goosebumps by all the traffic
1 and 999 on Alexa your site is getting into the hot tub with a margarita singing ‘ We are the Champions ‘
Ultimately we’d all like to be in that hot tub…but most of us will never even come close. So you need to shoot for the next level, don’t try to go from 5 millionth to 150,000th, just shoot for the next level up. Until you find your site’s ‘ comfort zone ‘, that’s the point where no matter what you try you can’t seem to get to the next level. That is also the point where you either accept your fate that that is where you belong, or you reach into that pocket and start advertising yourself to push your site to the next level.
