Merci Garry & Julian!!

I've a book for illustrators where I can check the submission guidelines and whatnot. They really expect an active role. Which absolutely makes sense, but the percentage they ask back, well it kinda makes me wonder if I really want to sign up with one. But I need to ask around a bit more and get more stories from other artists.

I don't think I'm promoting my work enough yet either, but I absolutely hate spamming my twitter feed or FB feed with ads. So I do try to schedule tweets when I remember and personalize it I have to promote something specific. The most important thing is to keep on creating and being as transparent as possible. I don't have secrets in how I create my art and I'm willing to share my knowledge when I can. I think so far this really worked as people don't think I'm sitting on a pedestal, being all mysteriously creative and they can only admire my work from afar. Now that could be a cool illustrations as well haha.

Big thank you, as usual!! ^_^

Thank you, everyone. :-)
TJ - the promotional side is a tough thing, especially if you're striking out on your own, however, Garry is right, that these days, if you sign up with an agency, or a record company, or a publisher, you are fully expected to take an active role in your own publicity as well. They want to see that you are taking an active role in your own career. For independent artists, there is a fine line between promoting your work to let people know its available and spamming the crap out of people, which a lot of indie writers unfortunately do. It really is a delicate balance - but I think the best way to do it is to be proactive, make it known you have work out there, but also be human - and not just a constant stream of ads. That can turn people off. Sometimes I think I don't promote enough - but I'm still trying to figure out that line. It's not easy.

Thanks for reading Miss TJ Lubraners. Julian always gives good advice throughout his writing and in interviews and the 'do it because you love it' is very true.

Promotion can be an annoyance and if you signed to an agency they would do it all for you although they would probably want you to be heavily involved also. It's walking a tightrope :-)

Hello! It took a wee bit longer to leave my comment here. That aside, I just love to read any interview from you two. I learn a lot and well it's just interesting and inspiring to peek into Julian's brain and how he sees the writer's world and how he finds his place in it.

" My advice would be for writers to keep writing, keep trying to improve and hope for the best. Do it because you love it and not because you think it’s a short cut to fame and fortune. Trust me, it isn’t." - perfectly said!

I still struggle to have a balance between promoting my own art and writing about it. Because in a way I am self-publishing my own stuff until I sign with an agency right? (if I want to sign with one that is...there are pros and cons with everything huh?) As soon as I focus more on one element, the promotion side tends to be pushed aside. Such annoyance. It's a delicate balance between social media, word of mouth and taking your own initiatives. I'm definitely interested to see how the self-publishing situation is going to change in the near future.

A big thank you to you both for doing this interview :)
